How to register for the Open Network
While Connected to an Open Network Wallplate

1. Configure your computer to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to obtain a valid IP address:
 Windows 98 Users:
Go to START MENU-> SETTINGS-> CONTROL PANEL-> NETWORK-> scroll through "Components Used by this Connection" to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)-> double click or click on PROPERTIES and click on "Obtain an IP address automatically". Then click OK.

Windows 2000 Users:
Go to START MENU-> SETTINGS-> CONTROL PANEL-> NETWORK AND DIALUP CONNECTIONS-> LOCAL AREA CONNECTION->PROPERTIES-> scroll through "components checked are used by this connection" and double click on "Obtain an IP address automatically". Then click OK.

Mac Users:
Go to APPLE-> TCP/IP-> set the CONFIGURE drop down menu to "Using DHCP Server".

Students:
Use your web browser to go to register.net.umd.edu and click on "Commuter Students". Follow the instructions to register.
Faculty and Staff:
Use your web browser to go to register.net.umd.edu and click on "Faculty and Staff". Follow the instructions to register.


2. Reboot your computer.

  • Once you are a registered user, you will have network access via any Open Network wallplate.
  • Each time that you use the Open Network, your computer should be set to DHCP to obtain a valid IP address.
